かつては布団の生地や着物の生地を多く生産し、織物の街としても有名だった青梅。大正時代から綿糸などを染める糸染めを行ってきた村田染工は、1989年に天然の藍だけを使った工房「壺草苑」を設立し、江戸時代に行われていたのと同じ「天然藍灰汁醗酵建て」にこだわり続け、唯一無二の藍染を作り続けています。
Ome used to produce a lot of cloth for Futon and Kimono, and it was also famous as a city of textiles. Murata-senko has been dyeing cotton thread since the Taisho period. In 1989, he established Kosoen, a studio using only natural indigo. He has continued to make unique indigo dyeing by sticking to the same natural indigo fermentation method used in the Edo period.
熟練の職人が見せる「天然藍灰汁醗酵建て」の世界
壺草苑が採用しているのは、「天然藍灰汁醗酵建て」という方法。蒅から藍の染料を作る工程を「藍建て」と言い、灰汁と石灰、麬（ふすま）といった天然の原料のみを使用し染料液を作るのがこの工法の特徴です。この天然原料のみを使用し、自然発酵によってできた藍の染液は時間と厳しい管理が必要なため、長年培った職人の熟練の技と経験が必要になります。そのため、現在では化学薬品を使って醗酵コントロールする方法が主流となっており、天然原料にこだわって藍染を行う工房は少ないとのこと。藍と職人さんとのコミュニケーションが生み出す天然の藍染からは、藍の独特の呼吸が感じられるかもしれません。

Kosoen uses a method called "Tennenai-aku-hakko-date”. The process of making indigo dye from "Sukumo" is called "Ai-date". The characteristic of this method is that it uses only natural materials such as harshness, lime, and bran to make the dye liquid. Only this natural material is used, and the indigo dye solution which is made by natural fermentation requires time and strict management, so it requires the skilled technique and experience of craftsmen cultivated for many years. For that reason, the fermentation control method using chemicals has become the mainstream now, and there are few studios that focus on natural ingredients and do indigo dyeing. You may feel the unique breath of indigo from the natural indigo dyeing created by the communication between indigo and craftsmen.

藍染再興への道のり
青梅はもともと夜具地（布団地などの木綿織物）の生産が盛んな地域で、最盛期には900軒もの織物屋が軒を連ねていたとのこと。村田染工も化学染料を使って夜具用の綿糸染めを行っていましたが、オイルショック以降生活の欧米化や海外製品の輸入の増加、化学繊維の台頭などの影響から夜具の生産は衰退していきます。この状況に危機感をもった村田染工は1985年に方針転換を決意し、「これからは天然染料の時代」と青梅近郊の伝統織物「青梅縞」の藍色に着目し、89年に天然の原料だけを使用した藍染の工房「壺草苑」を開きました。

Ome was originally an area where it was active to produce bedding cloth such as cotton textiles, and at its peak, there were as many as nine hundred textile shops lined up. Murata-senko also used chemical dyes to make cotton dyeing for night wear, but the production of night wear declined due to the westernization of people's life after the oil shock, the increase in imports of foreign products, and the rise of chemical fiber. Alarmed by this situation, Murata-senko decided to change its policy in 1985. Focusing on "the age of natural dyes from now on" and the color of natural indigo of the traditional textile "Ome-jima" in the suburbs of Ome, in 1989, they opened "Kosoen", an indigo dyeing studio using only natural ingredients.

藍染は微生物の働きによって染め上げられます。壺草苑で行っている「天然藍灰汁醗酵建て」は自然発酵のため、管理が非常に難しく、工房長の村田さんは休みの日も工房を訪れ、藍の状態を常にチェックされているそうです。江戸時代には庶民の間で大流行し一世を風靡した藍染ですが、その文化を継承している職人さんも年々少なくなってきています。世界に誇るジャパンブルーと呼ばれ、染められた生地には殺菌・抗菌作用やUVカット効果もあると言われています。使う人を優しく守ってくれる日本が世界に誇る藍を、皆さんぜひ生活に取り入れてみてはいかがでしょうか。
