“Mon”, the Japanese emblems, used to be found everywhere: on the shop signboards and curtains, or on kimono and other personal items. Edo people enjoyed designing unique and humorous “mon” for themselves. At school, children practiced cutting “mon” out of paper, or “mon-kiri” ― so why not try for yourself? Fold the paper, trace the stencil with your knife, then open the paper... and the beautiful pattern appears. Many “mon” represent nature, and carry various meanings, such as pine, bamboo and plum expressing happiness.
