Oshima

Volcanic Island in the Kuroshio Current

Oshima

Izu Oshima is the largest of the Izu Islands, located in the ocean, 120 km south of central Tokyo. Mount Mihara rises 758 m above sea level at the center of the island. The entire island of Izu Oshima is an active volcano, the base of which continues to the sea floor. It is also part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, and about 97% of the island is regulated by the Natural Parks Act. Therefore, the natural landscape and ecosystem are well protected, making it an island where visitors can enjoy and learn about the connection between people, land, and nature.

  6. Spot1 The Great Road Cut About 30 min.

The large section of the strata tells the history of volcanic eruptions on Izu Oshima. Large-scale eruptions used to occur on Izu Oshima every 100 to 200 years on average, and volcanic ejecta such as scoria and volcanic ash accumulated and formed the stripe pattern. The stripes are about 30 m high and 630 m long, and are also known as "baumkuchen" because of their appearance. The strata look like folds because of their gentle curvature, but they were originally formed by parallel layers of earth over an undulating terrain, and are now rippling.

Originally, this was a crater lake created by a magmatic phreatomagmatic eruption called "Habu no Ike", which occurred in the 800s A.D. A large tsunami caused by the Genroku Earthquake scraped away the space between the crater lake and the ocean. The site was spotted and the remaining huge rocks were excavated to open the port of Habu Harbor. The view from the Habu Port Lookout provides a panoramic view of the entire harbor and clearly shows that the harbor makes full use of the crater lake’s topography. The scenery of the tranquil Habu Port is truly spectacular.

Habu Port is a small harbor town on the southeast coast of Oshima. The quiet bay, which takes advantage of the topography of the crater lake, was an important wind-watching port for navigation in the days when there were no such things as motors. Although it has now given up its role as a sea gateway to Motomachi Port, it still retains the strong atmosphere of an old-fashioned, elegant port town.

  7. Akappage(Red Hill)

Akappage is a "scoria cone" formed about 3,400 years ago when magma erupted with great force and rapidly accumulated around the crater. The scoria that erupted was exposed to the air while it was still hot enough to oxidize and became a rusty red color. The interior of this hill and the bright red scoria can be observed up close at the Sunset Palm Line trail cut.
